Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA)
LMQ are the leading CBTA training consultants in CBTA having incorporated CBTA in our training since 1995; trained many organisations to incorprate our CBTA principles; and are the foundation authors for the ICAO Pilot Core Competencies.
Overview
What is Competency-Based Training and Assessment?
Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) develops core competencies rather than just tasks. Of course the basic tasks, skills and procedures still need to be trained but the emphasis of CBTA is in developing the nine competencies that will enable pilots and other aviation professionals to deal with a range of challenges that may not be covered by SOPs or typical traditional training. Often refered to as 'Black Swan' events, these are situations that the crew nor in fact anyone else has ever faced before, and the competencies give them a chance to manage the situation as well as they can.
The competencies are therefore the essence of resilience which we define in three parts:
- The ability to bounce back when performance has been degraded.
- To prevent performance being degraded when crew are under stress.
- To avoid situations in the first place that will then challenge the crew.
The pilots core competencies are: Application of Knowledge (KNO), Flight Path Management Automation (FPA) and Manual (FPM), Application of Procedures (PRO), Communications (COM), Leadership and Teamwork (LTW), Problem Solving and Decision Making (PSD), Situational Awareness (SAW) and Workload Management (WLM).
LMQ has designed and delivered Instriuctor Training, and Human Factors programmes in aviation since 1993, and has been training high-performance teams since 1985. Our programmes are aligned with EASA, UK CAA Standards Document 29 and ICAO requirements, and are tailored to each operator rather than delivered from a fixed syllabus.
